ACL rehab: what the nine months actually look like.

Dr. Sara Lindqvist

An ACL rebuild is a long road, but it's a predictable one. Here's what each phase looks like, and the tests you'll pass along the way.

Months 0–2: calm and straighten

The goals are a straight knee, a quiet joint and a quad that switches on. Walking without crutches usually comes in the first few weeks.

Months 2–5: build strength

This is gym time. We track your strength against the other leg, and you start running once you hit 70%.

Months 5–9: power and sport

Hopping, cutting and sport drills. You return to full training only after passing every test, usually around nine months.
