Ice, heat or neither? What to do in the first 48 hours.

Marcus Bello

For years the advice was rest and ice. The research has moved on, and so has the advice we give.

Protect, then move

Protect the injury for a day or two, but start gentle movement as soon as you can. Total rest slows healing.

What about ice?

Ice can help with pain, but it doesn't speed up healing. Use it if it makes you feel better, and skip it if it doesn't.
